今天要跟大家介紹 against 這個字，想到 against，大家腦中浮現的是什麼樣的畫面呢？是新聞上反對某項法令的抗議遊行？還是兩支球隊在場上廝殺的景象？不論是社會議題或是運動比賽，只要是形容「對立」關係的情況，against 就很有可能會出場！可以說只要有 against 在的地方，就會冒出衝突的火花。
雖然 against 帶有對峙的含義，但也不單單只有「對立、反對」的意思，例如以下這兩個句子的 against 就不能直接翻成「反對」：
Please do not lean against the door.
The moon looks especially bright against the dark blue sky.
所以這兩句話的 against 分別是什麼意思呢？接著就讓我帶著大家看看 against 有哪些用法，一起來解謎吧～Let’s go!
Against 的用法
Against 跟 in、on、at 一樣，是英文的介系詞，而它的用法又可以分為 5 大類，我們趕快來看看：
1️⃣ Against 表示「對立」
Against 最常見用來敘述兩個「立場對立」的人事物。若要描述對一件事「抱持著反對的態度、意見」，我們會用 be 動詞＋against 的組合，或是 vote against (投票反對) 以及 speak against (聲言反對) 這兩個片語動詞表示。
Some people in town voted against the construction of the dam.
鎮上有些人投票反對建造水壩。Several employees spoke against the company’s new overtime policy.
好幾位員工聲言反對公司新的加班政策。
Many parents are against their children using social media at a young age.
許多父母反對孩子年紀還小就使用社群媒體。
🔎 如果是針對某個動作，against 後面記得要用 V+ing！
Are you for or against my plan?
你贊成還是反對我的計畫？
🔎 “for or against” 指「贊成或反對」，是非常實用的片語。
另外，against 可以當「違反、違背」的意思，例如違反法規以及違背某人的意願、期待等等。
It is against the law to break into someone else’s house.
闖入別人的家是違法的。He decided to quit his job and become a musician against his parents’ wishes.
他違背父母的意願，決定辭職當樂手。
前面有提到，against 常會在體育競賽的情況中看到，而且都會以 A against B 這種形式出現，在這裡，against 有「對戰、對抗」的含義，明顯地指出 A 和 B 為對手的關係。
Ferrari will be up against Red Bull for this year’s Formula One Championship.
法拉利車隊在今年一級方程式賽車將面臨的對手是紅牛車隊。
🔎 “up against” 常用在競賽的情況，表示「對上」的意思。The two tennis players are close friends, so they dislike playing against each other.
兩位網球選手是很要好的朋友，所以他們不喜歡在球場上較勁。
2️⃣ Against 表示「防備」
Against 還可以指「防備」的意思，尤其是搭配上 protect (防護)、insure (保險) 這些本身具保護含義的動詞組成 protect against、insure against 的片語動詞。
Homeowners should insure their houses against fire and natural disasters.
屋主們應該要替房子買火災和天災險。Wearing sunscreen helps protect against skin damage caused by UV rays.
塗防曬乳有助於預防紫外線造成的皮膚損傷。The tree provided the workers with a place to rest against the harsh sun.
大樹提供了工人們一個可以抵禦烈日的休息處。
3️⃣ Against 表示「對…不利」
Against 的另外一種用法是描述勝算不在某人這邊，用法上常搭配動詞寫成 work against 和 count against，表示「對…不利」，例如：
His old age works against him in this job.
他年紀大不利於做這份工作。The city councilor’s bad public image will count against him in this election.
市議員糟糕的公眾形象對他這次選舉不利。
還有呢，在處理法律案件的過程中，也常會用 against 來描述「對（被告）不利的」情況，我們往下看例句就知道了！
Phoebe decided to press charges against her landlord for breaking the contract.
Phoebe 因為房東違約決定要對他提告 。The prosecutors are building a criminal case against the film director.
檢察官正在準備對電影導演提起刑事訴訟。
4️⃣ Against 表示「位置關係」
就像其他大家比較熟悉的介系詞，against 也能表示兩樣物品或是人物具體的位置關係。其中一個 against 的用法是形容朝著「反方向」前進的情況，像「逆風」就是 against the wind、「逆著（水）流」則是 against the current，在描述船隻和飛機的航行方向常會用到。
The boat was moving slowly against the strong river current.
船逆著洶湧的河流緩緩地前行。The marathon runners struggled to make progress as they ran against the wind.
馬拉松選手們因為逆風跑，所以寸步難行。
Against 除了有「逆…方向」的用法外，它還有「緊靠著、倚靠著」東西表面的意思。比如說，lean against the wall 就是描述「倚靠著牆壁」這個姿勢啦～
Please do not lean against the door! It could open at any minute.
請不要倚靠著那扇門！它隨時都有可能會打開。She slouched against the wall and sighed.
她無精打采地靠著牆並嘆了一口氣。
5️⃣ Against 表示「對照」
最後呢，against 還可以將兩件事「做對比」，也能表示一個東西「襯托著」另一個。所以無論是比較兩個不同時期的數據📉，或是描述畫作和景象的時候 🖼，against 都能派上用場！
The moon looks especially bright against the dark blue sky.
月亮在深藍夜空的襯托下看起來格外明亮。Our team’s productivity has improved against last quarter.
與上期相比，我們團隊的生產力提升了不少。
補充：實用的 against 片語

Beverly seems to have something against people who don’t share her beliefs.

Sam has nothing against spicy food, but his stomach just can’t handle it.
Sam 沒有不喜歡辛辣的食物，但他的胃受不了。
📍against all odds 克服萬難
Against all odds, Marin Alsop became the first female conductor of a major American orchestra.
Marin Alsop 克服萬難當上了美國主要交響樂團的第一位女性指揮家。
📍the odds are against… 對…不利
With only three days of practice, I’m afraid the odds are against us in this competition.
由於我們只練習了三天，我覺得這次比賽獲勝的機率恐怕不大。
📍against the clock 爭分奪秒、分秒必爭
The whole team is working against the clock to prepare for the product launch.
整個團隊爭分奪秒地為產品發表會做準備。
