Upon 比起 on、at、in 這些常用的介系詞，在英文裡比較少見，因此讓很多人不太確定怎麼正確使用它。對 upon 這個字感到陌生的同學，趕快往下看看英文庫整理出 upon 的四種用法，以後選擇介系詞的時候就有更多種寫法啦！
1. 等同於 “on”
Upon 這個字最常見的用法，其實可以和 on 相互替代，表示「在…上」。看看以下例句：
He spilled a few drops of beer upon the table.
他把幾滴啤酒灑在桌上。I was told that human beings are put upon this earth for a purpose, not by coincidence.
我聽說人類被降生於地球上是有意義的，而非巧合。She couldn’t help shivering while stepping upon the stage.
她踏上舞台時不禁顫抖。He fixed his gaze upon me.
他盯著我看。
除此之外，Upon 也可以和接在「特定動詞」後面的 on 作替換。它和上述的用法最主要的差別是它比較抽象，著重於功能性的用法。請參考這些例子：
After their parents died in the accident, they had no one to depend upon/on.
他們的父母死於意外後，他們就沒有人可以依靠了。Based upon/on a study conducted last year, obesity is highly correlated with sugar consumption.
根據去年的一份研究，肥胖和糖分攝取有很高的關聯性。The manager said that she needs to reflect upon/on the proposal.
經理說她得再思考一下這個提案。All our hope rests upon/on this bet.
我們的希望都寄託在這個賭注上。Don’t ever dwell upon/on your past mistakes.
永遠不要耽溺於你過去犯下的錯誤。The American dream is built upon/on the efforts of immigrants.
美國夢構築在移民的心血上。The teacher drew upon/on his own experience to encourage the students.
老師藉著自己的經驗鼓勵學生。
💡 不過要特別注意，不是每一個接在片語動詞後面的「on」都可以用「upon」替換唷～
2. 等同於 “as soon as”
在這裡，upon 的中文意思是「一…就…」，表達事情即刻、馬上發生的概念。來看例句吧！
Upon leaving the house, I ran into my ex.
我一出家門就遇到前任。A lot of the boys here were forced into labor upon turning 12.
這裡很多男孩子一滿十二歲就被強迫勞動。Upon the release of her new album, it became an instant hit.
她的新專輯一發行，就一炮而紅。Please check in at the reception desk upon arrival.
到達之後請立刻到櫃檯辦理入住。
看完例句，還有一個小提醒：請特別注意因為 upon 是介系詞，後面只能接「動名詞」或「名詞」，不能直接放一般動詞喔 💡
3. 強調「龐大的數量」
當 upon 被置於兩個相同的「名詞」中間，具有加強、誇飾的效果，強調句子中的那個名詞。看看例句，會更清楚 😀
Year upon year she waited, but never received a letter from her husband in the army.
年復一年她等著，卻從來沒有收到在軍中的丈夫任何一封信。The couple drove mile upon mile, trying to figure a way out of the desert.
這對夫妻行駛了好幾公里，試圖找到離開沙漠的路。
4. 表示「即將發生」
這邊的 upon 當作形容詞使用，用來指稱一個事件快要到來，後面往往會放受詞。這個用法比較少見，通常是用於比較盛大的事情，例如聖誕節或是特別重要的日子。
Christmas is almost upon us again.
聖誕節又快到了。The students are stressed out because exam week is upon them.
學生們壓力很大，因為考試週快到了。
