meanwhile 是一個滿常使用的字，不論是在口說還是寫作都是，但學習者在使用這個字時往往會忽略一些細節，或是只知道意思而不會造句，所以今天就要來幫你解惑 meanwhile 的用法，也會讓你了解 meanwhile 和 in the meantime 的差別在哪喔！
meanwhile 表示「同時；在此期間」
英文定義為：at or during the same time ; in the period of time between two events
也就是說，是有某兩件事發生在同一時間點，或是在某兩個事件之間，才會用 meanwhile 這個字唷。
meanwhile 在此作為副詞，通常會放在句首並加上逗號。
Amanda closed her eyes and counted to thirty. Meanwhile, the other kids hid themselves.
阿曼達閉上眼睛並數數到三十，在此同時，其他小朋友去躲起來。The speech will begin in five minutes. Meanwhile, you can take a break.
講座會在五分鐘內開始，在此期間，你們可以休息一下。
此外，meanwhile 也可以當作插入語使用，這時前後都會加上逗號。
I am studying hard in the library. My parents, meanwhile, are traveling happily in Japan.
我正在圖書館用功讀書，而我爸媽同時正在日本快樂地旅遊。Edward went to a business trip to Japan. His wife, meanwhile, took care of their children on her own.
愛德華出差去日本了，他太太在此期間就自己帶小孩。
還有一種方式是使用連接詞 and 或 but 連接兩個句子唷。
Susan was washing dishes and meanwhile her brother was playing computer games.
在蘇珊洗碗的同時，她弟弟正在玩電腦遊戲。The meals will be ready after one o’clock, but meanwhile we can eat some snacks.
餐點在一點後才會準備好，不過在此期間，我們可以吃點點心。We can’t go outside because of the typhoon, but meanwhile we can watch movies indoors.
由於颱風的關係，我們沒辦法出去外面，不過在這同時，我們可以在室內看電影。
meanwhile 和 in the meantime 一樣嗎？
meanwhile 和 in the meantime 意思和用法是很類似的，翻成中文皆為「同時；在此期間」，不過兩者的用途還是有些微的不同，因為 in the meantime 通常只會用於兩個事件的期間 (in the period of time between two events)，像是等待事情發生的空檔（例如：活動開始前、公車到之前、聚餐等人到之前這樣子的情境）：
以上面的第二個句子為例，meanwhile 可以代換成 in the meantime，也就是從「說這句話」到「餐點準備好」的期間：
The meals will be ready after one o’clock, but we can eat some snacks in the meantime.
我們再來看幾個例句吧：
The schools were closed because of COVID-19. In the meantime, the teachers taught online.
那些學校都因為新冠肺炎關閉了，在此期間，老師們在線上教學。（👆 上面這個句子，in the meantime 就是指學校「關閉」到「開放」的期間。）
The concert will begin soon. In the meantime, please turn off your cell phone.
音樂會快要開始了，在此期間，請將您的手機關機。（👆 上面這個句子，in the meantime 就是指「宣布這句話」到「音樂會開始前」的期間。）
那接下來，我們看看這兩句話的差別吧，你也可以先想一想：
① I’ll do the laundry. Meanwhile, you can wash the dishes.
（👆 這句話使用了 meanwhile，意思是指「同時」(at the same time)，所以整句話就是說：我要去洗衣服，在同一時間你可以去洗碗。）
② I’ll do the laundry. In the meantime, you can wash the dishes.
（👆 這句話使用了 in the meantime，時間是指在開始洗衣服到結束的這段期間，所以整句話就是：我要去洗衣服，在（我洗衣服的）這段期間，你可以去洗碗。這句話也隱含著在我洗衣服的期間是一個空檔，你在等我洗完衣服後要一起去做下一件事。）
📖 補充：
meanwhile 和 in the meantime 是比較常看到的用法，你可能也會在英文字典或句子中看到 “in the meanwhile” 和單獨使用 “meantime”，這兩組用法其實也是可行的，只是會比較冷僻一點唷。
