「another、other、the other」等正確用法一次搞懂！

唷齁～大家好，歡迎來到英文庫，我是 Min 👋。今天咱們要來釐清 another、other、the other 的用法。一開始就先解決大家最困擾的問題：它們的意思到底有什麼不同？

很簡單，假設有一天你發現你姊姊的男朋友居然劈腿，你在跟朋友講這件事，那下面這兩種說法，各代表什麼情況呢？

He has another girlfriend! Don’t tell my sister.
他還有另一個女友！別告訴我姊姊。

➡  用 another 加單數名詞  girlfriend，代表他有小三 💢。

He has other girlfriends! Don’t tell my sister.
他還有其他的女友們！別告訴我姊姊。

➡  用 other 加複數名詞 girlfriends，代表他不只有小三，可能還有小四，甚至小五、小六 💢💢💢。

在上面的情況，第一句是你姊姊的男朋友有另一個女友，第二句則是他其他的女友不只一個。假如有一天，他想跟你姊姊結婚了，你可能就會跟朋友說：

He has dumped the other girlfriend because he wants to marry my sister.
他已經甩了另一個女友，因為他想娶我姊姊。

➡ 用 the other 加單數名詞 girlfriend，指我姊之外的那個女友。

He has dumped the other girlfriends because he wants to marry my sister.
他已經甩了其他的女友們，因為他想娶我姊姊。

➡ 用 the other 加複數名詞 girlfriends，指我姊之外的那些女友。

從這幾個例句的對照可以發現，這三者最主要的差別在於：單純想指「別的」、「其他的」時，單數用 another，複數用 other，但有限定的對象時，就一律要用 the other。至於其他的小差別，讓我們繼續看下去，Let’s go! 💃

一、another 的用法

1. another 代表「跟現有的不一樣」，也就是「別的」、「其他的」，這時候後面是加可數名詞的「單數」，來看例句的示範吧。

Can you choose another T-shirt? This one is ugly!
你可以挑別件 T-shirt 嗎？這件很醜耶！

I don’t like this restaurant. Let’s go and find another one.
我不喜歡這間餐廳，我們去找其他間吧。

Look! There’s another one of those bugs.
你看啦！又有一隻那種蟲 😠。

2. another 也可以代表「在原有的之外再追加」，也就是「再一個」、「 又一個」。這時候比較特別，後面除了一樣加可數名詞的「單數」之外，也可以先接數字，再加可數名詞的「複數」喔，例如：

Do you want another (=one more) coke?
你要再來一罐可樂嗎？

They want to have another (=one more) baby.
他們想要再一個小孩。

I’ve got another ten questions to do.
我還有十道題目要做。

They’ve got another two kilometers to go.
他們還有兩公里的路程。

二、other 的用法

other 的中文是「其他的」，你看喔，other 的拼法等於是把 another 的 an 拿掉對吧？所以 other 就形同是 another 的複數版本，看看以下的對照：

Do you have another idea?
你有其他想法嗎？
➡ 加可數名詞的單數 idea

Do you have other ideas?
你有其他想法嗎？
➡ 加可數名詞的複數 ideas

There is another child in the room.
房裡有另一個小孩。
➡ 加可數名詞的單數 child

There are other children in the room.
房裡有其他小孩。
➡ 加可數名詞的複數 children

前面的例句示範了 other 都是接可數名詞的「複數」。不過，other 的前面一旦碰到 some 或 any 時，它就會變大方了，後面加可數名詞的「單數」、可數名詞的「複數」、不可數名詞，都是可以的 👌，例如：

It’s hard to find any other conclusion.
要找到其他的結論很難。
➡ 加可數名詞的單數 conclusion

Do you have any other questions?
你還有什麼其他的問題嗎？
➡ 加可數名詞的複數 questions

I’m busy now. Can we talk about it some other time?
我現在很忙，我們可以其他時間討論這件事嗎？
➡ 加不可數名詞 time

三、the other 的用法

前面 other 的例句都是屬於泛指，也就是並未限定是哪些對象。但是當 other 前面加上一個 the，寫成 the other，這時就開始有限定的對象囉，等於是把兩個以上的人事物切分成兩邊的概念，也就是「另一個」、「其餘的」，例如：

I can’t find the other sock.
我找不到另一只襪子。

Go to the other side of the room.
你過去房裡的另一邊。

He hasn’t finished the other assignments.
他還沒完成其餘的作業。

She isn’t angry with me, but the other friends are!
她沒有在生我的氣， 但其他朋友都在生我的氣！

對了，想表示「某人的另一個」時，other 前面的 the 可以換成 his/her/my/your/their……等等，例如：

This is his other house.
這是他的另一間房子。

Did you see their other son?
你有看到他們的另一個兒子嗎？

Btw 小補充：

為了方便你理解，上面介紹的都是後面加名詞的用法，但 another、other、the other 本身其實也都可以當代名詞。這時候它們的後面就不需要再加名詞囉，例如：

A: “I just saw a cockroach.”  B: “Oh no, another (= another cockroach)!”
A:「我剛看到一隻小強。」B:「糟糕，又有一隻！」

Some people are more friendly than others (= other people).
有些人比其他人友善。

There were two beds in the room. I didn’t like the one near the door, so I slept on the other (= the other bed).
房裡有兩張床，我不喜歡靠門的那一張，所以睡另一張。

There were three beds in the room. I slept on the one near the door, and my friends slept on the others (= the other beds).
房裡有三張床，我睡在靠門的那一張，朋友則睡在其他張。
