Mean 當動詞的用法
這邊先簡單解答💡，其實 mean 後面要 + to V 或 V-ing 是視不同詞意而定，因此，我們依詞意依序做說明。🏃
小提醒：mean 的過去式和過去分詞不是 + ed，而是 meant，發音 /ment/
1️⃣ Mean 表示「意思是、是…的意思」
這是大家所熟悉的詞意，每當聽到不會的字時，可以說「What does _____ mean?」 來詢問那個字的含義。而當對方講了什麼話讓你不確定時，或你覺得對方話中有話，你也可以問「What do you mean by that?」，這邊固定會搭配介系詞 by。再看看更多例句吧～

這個片語的意思是什麼？That’s exactly what I mean!
我就是這個意思！A: They said something good about you.
A: 他們說了些你的好話。
B: Do you mean Jack and Lisa?
B: 你是指 Jack 和 Lisa 嗎？I didn’t mean that to be a brag.
我這麽說沒有炫耀的意思。
日常生活中，mean 也很常用來張顯強調語氣 ，表示「就是…的意思」。
Leave me alone. I mean it.
離我遠點，我是說真的。You can’t be late tomorrow. You must be there by 7 a.m., and I mean by 7 a.m.
你明天不能遲到，七點前一定要到，記住是七點前。
另外，當別人說 「What do you mean?」，其實視情況有兩種解讀可能。第一，對方不明白你，真的提出疑問。第二， 對方其實不是真的要問你是什麼意思，而是想表示你有點煩，或是他不太同意你說的話，類似中文的「你什麼意思啊」。

A: 別碰我，你好煩。

B: 你什麼意思啊，你才煩咧。
2️⃣ Mean 表示「對…具有意義、對…很重要」
如果想表示某件事或人對誰具有意義、很重要，程度從低至高，可以依序這樣說：mean a lot/the world/everything to 人，這用法也很適合用來感謝別人幫了大忙 🤗。反之，如果對誰而言不具任何意義，可以說：mean nothing to 人。
Can you help me? This favor would mean a lot to me.
你可以幫我嗎？這個忙對我來說很重要。Can you please give me a ride? It would mean a lot to me.
可以請你載我一程嗎？這會幫了我大忙。Her dogs mean the world to her.
她的狗對她來說就是全世界。The will to win means nothing without the will to prepare.
沒有準備的決心，再怎麼想贏也毫無意義。
3️⃣ Mean 表示「打算、計畫」，也可延伸為「有意、故意」
如果想表達有打算、計畫做什麼，可以說 mean to do something，概念就像 plan or intend to do something，後面加的是不定詞 to V。
I’m so sorry. I’ve been meaning to call you back.
我很抱歉，我一直有想要回電給你。He meant to tell Jenny his feelings for her, but she didn’t show up.
他打算告訴 Jenny 他對她的感覺，但她並未出現。
除此，mean 也可以衍伸為「有意、故意」的意思，後面同樣加 to V，也可以加名詞。
I did not mean to hurt you. It was an honest mistake.
我不是有意傷害你，只是無心之過。Did you mean to leave the kids in the car?
你是故意把小孩留在車裡嗎？We didn’t mean any harm.
我們沒有惡意。
4️⃣ Mean 表示「註定」
當你覺得一件事非偶然，而是註定的，就可以用這個用法：be meant to V，稍微注意 mean 前面有 be 動詞，mean 變成 p.p. 過去分詞，而後面加 to V。😁
Everyone believed that Jennifer and Ben were meant to be together.
每個人都相信 Jennifer 和 Ben 註定要在一起。If it is meant to happen, it will happen.
若命中註定，就會發生。
5️⃣ Mean 表示「結果是、意味著」
當你說「A事件 means B事件」時，就代表 A 的發生， B 可能也會跟著發生，也就是 mean 前後會帶有一點因果關係。在用法上 mean 後面可以加名詞或 that 子句，又或者加 V-ing。看看例句解惑吧～
The implementation of the new policy means more job opportunities.
新政策的實施意味著更多工作機會。The hard work you put in today means that later you will be where you want to be.
你今天投入的努力意味著你之後會成為你想成為的人。Quitting the job means having more time with my family.
辭職意味著有更多時間陪家人。If we want to finish the project on time, it means starting off right now.
如果我們要準時完成專案，那意味著現在就要動工了。
補充：Mean 當形容詞的用法
這邊介紹 mean 作為形容詞時兩個常見的意思：第一是「對…不友善、不客氣」，用法上 be mean (to 人)。第二是「兇惡的」，經常以複合形容詞 mean-looking 的固定用法做使用。另外，特別小補充在英式英文裡 mean 可以表示「小氣、吝嗇的」，但在美式英文則比較少有這層含義唷！
