講到 suggest 這個動詞，你們應該都知道是「建議」的意思，在日常生活還算滿常用到的。不過除了這個意思，你知道 suggest 還有「指出」的字義嗎？不知道也沒關係，就讓我們一起來搞懂 suggest 的各種用法吧！
suggest 的意思
首先，一起先來讀些例句認識 suggest 主要的兩種意思吧～
① suggest 表示「建議」：
I suggest that we take a short break and eat something.
我建議我們先休息一下並吃點東西。Dad suggested that my brother apply for the job.
我爸建議我哥去應徵那份工作。
② suggest 表示「指出」：
The survey suggests that most customers are satisfied with our meals.
那份調查指出大部分的消費者對我們的餐點很滿意。These data suggest that the U.S. economy is getting better.
這些資料指出美國經濟正在變好。Are you suggesting that he did it on purpose?
你是在暗示他是故意那麼做的嗎？
看完之後，你有發現在這兩組例句中都用了 that 子句嗎？而這兩組 that 子句的用法是一樣的嗎？🤔

一、suggest 當「建議」的用法
suggest 表示「提議、建議」是最常用的意思，而這部分的搭配用法也最豐富唷，可以把筆記寫起來寫好寫滿 📝～
suggest + 名詞/動名詞
要表達「建議某件事」，可以直接加上名詞，而若是「建議去做某件事情」時，suggest 後面的動詞要用動名詞 (V-ing)， 就跟 enjoy、finish 這些動詞的用法一樣唷～
My sister suggested a nice cafe for the afternoon tea.
我姊姊推薦一間吃下午茶不錯的咖啡店。Can you suggest a name for our new pet?
針對我們新寵物的名字，你可以提議一下嗎？
A: I don’t know which dress to buy.
A: 我不知道要買哪一件洋裝。B: Um… I suggest the blue one.
B: 嗯… 我建議藍色那一件。
Mom suggested taking a walk after dinner.
媽媽提議晚餐後去散步。I suggest watching this movie, but my friend preferred another one.
我提議看這部電影，但我朋友偏好看另一部。The teacher suggested taking a field trip after the final exam.
老師提議期末考後去戶外郊遊。
suggest + that 子句
suggest 當建議之意在搭配 that 子句時，特別留意唷～⚠️ that 子句中的動詞一律要使用「原形動詞」！
直接看例句比較清楚：
My friend suggested (that) I quit the job.
我朋友建議我辭掉工作。His dad suggested (that) he buy the car.
他爸爸建議他買那台車。I suggest (that) this paragraph be rewritten.
我建議這個段落重寫。
你可以看到，標記紅色的部分皆為原形動詞，不管時態也不管前面搭配的主詞是單數還是複數唷！
而 that 在句中是可以省略的，不過在你還對這個用法不熟悉前，我會建議先保留 that 來提醒自己要用子句（主詞＋原形動詞）唷～
那如果是否定的意思，就直接在原形動詞前面加上 not 即可：
My friend suggested (that) I not quit the job.
His dad suggested (that) he not buy the car.
I suggest (that) this paragraph not be rewritten.
此外，這個用法常搭配 may/can 的問句，會使得你在給建議時語氣比較溫和一點：
May I suggest (that) we discuss this issue next time?
我可以建議我們下次討論這個議題嗎？Can I suggest (that) everyone be in the office before 10 a.m.?
我可以建議每個人在早上十點前要在辦公室嗎？
suggest + wh- 子句
除了 that 子句，suggest 後面還可以加上 wh- 子句，像是 what、how、where、when、which 等，通常會用問句的形式，例如：
Can anyone suggest how we could solve the problem?
有任何人可以建議我們要如何解決這個問題嗎？Can you suggest where I can buy a durable backpack?
你可以建議我哪裡能買到耐用的後背包嗎？
suggest… to 人
如果要表達「建議…給某人」的話，一定要搭配介系詞 to，這個部分比較多學習者會寫錯，例如：
The manager suggested some new ideas to the boss. ⭕️
The manager suggested the boss some new ideas. ❌
那位經理提議了一些新的想法給老闆。
If this happened to one of your friends, what would you suggest to him/her?
假如這件事發生在你其中一個朋友身上，你會怎麼建議他／她？Mike suggested to his parents that they should buy a new car.
Mike 建議他父母應該買一台新車。➡ 如果建議的事情為子句，可以像這一句用 suggest to 人 that…
suggest… for…
suggest… for… 會表示「對於…而建議…」，帶有推薦的意味，意思近於 recommend。
其中 for 表示「為了…；對於…」，後面可以加上某人、某事、目的或是職位。
Mom suggests baking soda for removing laundry odors.
媽媽推薦用小蘇打粉來去除衣服上的污漬。What do you suggest for insomnia?
對於失眠，你有什麼建議嗎？The doctor suggested the vitamin supplements for my grandma.
醫生推薦這款維生素補充品給我奶奶。Who would you suggest for the job?
你們推薦誰做這個工作呢？We all suggested Catherine for the position.
我們都推薦 Catherine 擔任那個職位。
補充：可以用 suggest 人 to V. 嗎？
舉例來說，如果要說「我朋友建議我辭職」，句子寫：My friend suggested me to quit the job.
這樣是對的嗎？🤔
答案是「不對」！🙅♀️
這個用法是多數學習者會犯的錯誤（我也曾錯過 😂），因為 to V. 用得太習慣了，所以會覺得用起來很順，但是 suggest 是沒有搭配 to V. 的用法的，如果要表示「建議某人去做某事」就是要用 suggest that 搭配原形動詞的句型才是正確的表達方式唷！這點要小心再小心！
My friend suggested (that) I quit the job. ⭕️
My friend suggested me to quit the job. ❌
His dad suggested (that) he buy the car. ⭕️
His dad suggested him to buy the car. ❌

二、suggest 當「指出」的用法
suggest 還可以表示「指出」之意，可以分為兩種指出：一種是比較明確地「表明」，同義字為 indicate，另一種則是比較弱地指出，近似於「暗示」，同義字為 imply。
那這個用法很常在研究報告相關的文章、報導中看到，所以會看到搭配與數據相關的主詞，例如：evidence（證據）、result（結果）、data（資料）、study（研究）、statistics（統計資料）、poll（民意調查）。
suggest + 名詞
The study suggests the possibility of using the chemical to treat skin cancer.
這份研究指出了使用這個物質來治療皮膚癌的可能性。The boy’s facial expression suggested a lack of interest in drawing.
那個男孩的表情表明了他對畫畫興趣缺缺。
suggest + that 子句
suggest 當「指出」時也可以搭配 that 子句，但是這裡就是一般的 that 子句，沒有規定要用原形動詞唷。
No evidence suggests (that) COVID-19 will disappear in summer.
沒有證據指出新冠肺癌將會在夏天消失。Laboratory studies suggest (that) vitamin D can reduce cancer cell growth and help control infections.
實驗研究指出了維他命 D 可以減少癌細胞成長並有助於控制感染。
而在表示「暗示」的意思時，常會搭配進行式使用，例如：
Are you suggesting (that) we shouldn’t cooperate with them?
你是在暗示我們不應該和他們合作嗎？Are you suggesting (that) I should be responsible for the loss?
你是在暗示我應該要為這次的損失負責嗎？I’m not suggesting (that) she is not a good fit for the position.
我並不是在指她不適合那個職位。
