whatever 當「無論如何」
whatever 用在形容一件不論有無發生，是否成立都不重要的事件，因為它對主要情況完全沒有影響。講明白點，就是無論怎麼、不管如何的意思。
🔎 whatever happens
最常見的配對非 whatever happens 莫屬，表示「無論發生什麼事⋯⋯」。
We will never give up working, whatever happens.
無論發生什麼事，我們不會放棄的。Whatever happens in the exam, the first thing is to keep calm.
無論考試發生什麼事，要先保持冷靜。
🔎 whatever + 主詞 + 動詞
這時候的 whatever 有修飾主要子句的功能，主要強調某個不可改變的事實、定律。
Whatever Logan says, do not believe him.
無論羅根說什麼，不要相信他。Whatever Bree did, it made no difference.
無論布麗做了什麼，都沒有用。
🔎 whatever + 名詞/名詞子句
跟前一個的意義相似，只不過後面接名詞（子句），進而排除會影響事情的變數。
Whatever the reason, the planners abandoned this project.
不管是什麼原因，策劃人放棄了這項計劃。Lisa goes for a run every morning, whatever the weather.
無論天氣怎麼樣，每天早上麗莎都會去跑步。Whatever decision you make, you have to face the consequences.
不論你的決定為何，你要承擔後果。
Whatever 當 「任何」
接下來， whatever 還可以變身為關係代名詞 (relative pronoun) 指「任何（事、物）」，在這種情況它是 any、anything 或 every、everything 的同義詞。
🔎 動詞 + whatever 的非限定子句
Feel free to take whatever you want from this bag of candies.
歡迎你隨心所欲地從這袋糖果中拿你想要的。She will try to do whatever is right.
她會努力做正確的事。Some parents allow their children to do whatever they like.
有些父母放任孩子做任何他們想做的事。The cook will prepare whatever you wish.
廚師會準備任何你喜歡的東西。
🔎 動詞＋whatever＋名詞子句
College students often do whatever work they can find.
大學生常做任何他們可以找到的工作。The athlete is willing to pay whatever price to win the competition.
為了贏得比賽，運動員不惜任何代價。
Whatever 當「無所謂」
除了前面兩種用法呢，如果只有單獨 whatever 一詞，又尤其作為口語答覆之用時，它就有「隨便、無所謂」的意思。因為它帶給人的感覺有點消極，還帶有不屑的態度，所以要斟酌使用，不要拿 whatever 來回應長輩或上司喔。
Roommate A: You never do the dishes. I am sick of cleaning up after you!
室友A：你吃完飯都不洗碗，我真是受夠幫你清理了！Roommate B: Whatever. 🙄
室友B：隨便啦。
不過如果後面加上一些補充的字，例如 whatever you say，就是指「你說了算」的意思，語氣比較溫和些。
A: Can we go on a picnic tomorrow?
A: 明天我們可不可以去野餐？B: Sure! Whatever you say.
B: 好啊，你說了算。
Whatever 當 「究竟什麼」
最後呢，如果想為 what- 開頭的句子添加些許驚訝、不耐煩或感興趣的口吻，可以用whatever 代替，不過也屬於口頭上的說法，不適用於書寫。

你到底是什麼意思？Whatever is the matter?
究竟怎麼了？Whatever happened to Sasha? I haven’t talked to her in two years.
夏莎後來過得怎麼樣？我兩年沒跟她聯絡了。
補充#1: whatever 和 no matter what 可以互換嗎？
疑，英文老師常會解釋 whatever = no matter what，但每種情況都可以這樣調換嗎？簡單的答案是：不能喔！
要符合以下兩個條件才可以把 whatever 換成 no matter what：
1️⃣ 確認 whatever 在句中有「無論」的意思。
2️⃣ 確定 whatever 那句有動詞，如果沒有的話，換成 no matter what 文法上說不通。
我們來用上面的例句看看吧～
Whatever Logan says, do not believe him.
➡ No matter what Logan says, do not believe him. ⭕️
We will never give up working, whatever happens.
➡ We will never give up working, no matter what happens. ⭕️
Lisa goes for a run every morning, whatever the weather.
➡ Lisa goes for a run every morning, no matter what the weather. ❌🔎 不能這樣換，因為子句只有名詞 “weather”，“what”在這裏是多餘的，可以寫 “no matter the weather” 就好。
