人生中總是會遇到很多選擇障礙，像是要不要去參加活動、要不要買這個、要不要辭職、要不要告白等等，那要用英文表達這個「要不要…」就是需要一個字，那就是 whether，欸欸不是 weather（天氣）喔 🤣，雖然唸起來一樣啦。那以下會介紹 whether 的兩大用法，話不多說，一起來認識 whether 吧！
whether 的定義
在深入講解 whether 的用法之前，想邀請你來發揮觀察力，看看這兩組句子有什麼異同吧：
Whether my parents will come to my graduation ceremony matters to me.
我爸媽是否來參加我的畢業典禮對我來說很重要。Can you tell us whether we can use that conference room?
你可以告訴我們是否可以使用那間會議室嗎？
Whether her mother agrees or disagrees, Nancy will marry Victor.
不論她媽媽同意或不同意，Nancy 都會和 Victor 結婚。We have to depart at 7 o’clock whether you finish your dinner or not.
不管你是否吃完晚餐了，我們都要在七點出發。
有沒有發現一樣是用到 whether，但是兩組的句子結構是不太一樣的呢？
對唷，whether 可以引出兩種子句，這在下面的部分會仔細介紹，而在意思上，whether 都是表示「是否」，母語者看到句中有 whether 時就會很直覺地連結到 yes or no，只是在第二組句子裡會多了「不管…/不論…」的語氣在，所以以下我們就會用這個不同來區分兩種用法，分別講解給你唷～
whether 表達「是否」的用法
whether 的意思為「是否」，用來引導出名詞子句，分別當作句子的主詞、補語、同位語及受詞，看看例句吧：
Whether she can win the competition is important.（當主詞）
她是否能贏得那場比賽是很重要的。Whether we will go hiking depends on the weather.（當主詞）
我們要不要去健行會取決於天氣狀況。
The question is whether he will come tomorrow.（當補語）
問題就是他明天會不會來。The question is whether you have enough time to finish the project.（當補語）
問題就是你有沒有足夠的時間去完成那份專案。
The argument whether the joke is funny doesn’t matter to me.（當同位語）
關於那個笑話是否好笑的爭論對我來說根本就不重要。You have to answer the question whether you still love me.（當同位語）
你必須回答我你是否還愛著我的這個問題。
The student worries about whether he can pass the exam.（當介系詞的受詞）
那個學生擔心他是否能通過考試。I don’t know whether the answer is correct.（當動詞的受詞）
我不知道那個答案是不是對的。Do you remember whether Emma’s birthday is in November or December?（當動詞的受詞）
你記得 Emma 的生日是在十一月還是十二月嗎？
💡 小提醒：如果你還不了解名詞子句是什麼，你可以把整坨 whether 子句想成是一個大名詞，以第一句來說就會變成 X is important.，只是這個 X 是會以 whether 加上主詞及動詞的結構所形成的。

whether 搭配 to V.
whether 子句還可以搭配 to V.，表示「是否要…」，例如：
I’m not sure whether to believe him.
我不確定是否要相信他。I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.
我不知道要哭還是要笑。You have to decide whether to quit or stay.
你必須決定要辭職還是留下。
whether 何時可以代換成 if？
if 也有「是否」的意思，比起 whether 是比較口語、不正式，不過並不是所有的 whether 都可以用 if 取代，簡單來說呢，有兩種情形可以用 if：
1️⃣ 當 whether 子句作為動詞的受詞時：
I don’t know whether/if the answer is correct.
我不知道那個答案是不是對的。The woman asked me whether/if I need help.
那位女士問我是否需要幫忙。I wonder whether/if you could give me some advice.
不知道你能否給我一些建議呢？
2️⃣ 子句前面搭配帶有不確定性的形容詞時：
I’m not sure whether/if the boss will come today.
我不確定老闆今天會不會來。She is uncertain whether/if the man is her Mr. Right.
她不確定這個男人是不是她的真命天子。It’s doubtful whether/if the guy is telling the truth.
這個人是不是在說實話是令人懷疑的。
反之來說，whether 其他的情況就是不能代換成 if 囉～
Whether… or not 的用法
whether 常會搭配 or not 一起用，這樣會更加重「是否」的感覺，而 or not 的位置可以緊接著 whether 後方或是在子句的句尾，我以上方的句子來示範吧：
Whether or not she can win the competition is important.
Whether she can win the competition or not is important.
I’m not sure whether or not to believe him.
I’m not sure whether to believe him or not.
if 也可以搭配 or not，但只能放子句的句尾，就沒有 if or not 的用法囉！
I don’t know if the answer is correct or not. ⭕️
I don’t know if or not the answer is correct. ❌
whether 表達「不管… 還是…」的用法
whether 的第二個用法是用來引出兩種或兩種以上的選項，表達「不管… 還是…」或「不論是否…」，這時候 whether 在句子中為連接詞，引導出副詞子句。
（💡 小提醒：不清楚副詞是什麼沒關係，只要知道 whether 跟 because、when、after 這些字一樣是連接詞，是用來連接兩個字句就好了～）
Whether or not you agree, I will buy that dishwasher.
Whether you agree or not, I will buy that dishwasher.
不管你同不同意，我都要買那台洗碗機。
Whether it rains or not, the baseball game will continue.
Whether or not it rains, the baseball game will continue.
無論會不會下雨，那場棒球比賽都會繼續進行。
⚠️ 留意一下，以上的 or not 可以放在 whether 後面或是子句的尾端，且 or not 原則上是不會省略的唷！
此外，whether 子句也可以放在後半部，意思不變，那這時候句中就不用逗號囉，例如：
I will buy that dishwasher whether or not you agree.
I will buy that dishwasher whether you agree or not.
除了用 or not，如果有兩個對等的選項也可以直接寫成 A or B，但 A 和 B 的詞性或結構要是相同的唷，例如：
Whether you agree or disagree, I will buy that dishwasher.
不管你同意或是不同意，我都要買那台洗碗機。（👉 agree 和 disagree 都是動詞，且意思對比）
Whether we succeed or fail, we must give it a try.
不論我們會成功或失敗，我們都一定要去試試看。（👉 succeed 和 fail 都是動詞，且意思對比）
Whether you are a child or an adult, you will enjoy this story.
不管你是小孩還是大人，你都會喜歡這個故事。（👉 a child 和 an adult 都是單數名詞，且意思對比）
