Hey guys! 我是英文庫的 Cecilia，在我們講中文的時候，經常會提到「雖然…」或「就算…」，聽起來意思好像差不多，但事實上換成英文相對應的 even though 和 even if，即使兩者都由 even 這個字組成，同樣帶有加強語氣，卻不可以互相替換，究竟它們的用法差在哪裡呢？

even though 的用法與例句
even though 的意思是「雖然」，表達一種「事實」，特別是已經發生的事、某個總是會發生的事實，甚至是令人感到驚訝、出乎意料或極端的事物。它與 though 和 although 一樣都用來連接兩個意思相反的陳述，但語氣比它們再強烈一點。
Even though she loves him, she still chooses to hide her feelings.
雖然她愛他，還是選擇隱藏她的情感。Even though I slept all day, I still felt exhausted.
雖然我睡了一整天，還是覺得累的跟狗一樣。Even though Lin Chi-Ling is Taiwan’s top model, she’s still down-to-earth.
雖然志玲姐姐是台灣第一名模，但她一點架子也沒有。
⚠️ 注意：中文裡有「雖然…，但是…」的概念，但不適用在英文裡，換句話說，如果要用英文表達相同的句型，雖然（even though/though）和但是（but）之間只能二選一。
even though 是 though 的延伸，語氣更為強烈，再強調一次，它和 though 一樣，不能和 but 並用喔！
Even though he worked very hard, he still got fired during the Coronavirus pandemic.
= Though he worked very hard, he still got fired during the Coronavirus pandemic.
= He worked very hard, but he still got fired during the Coronavirus pandemic.
雖然他很努力工作，還是在新冠肺炎大流行期間遭到革職。
even if 的用法與例句
even if 在中文裡可以解釋成「即使、就算、儘管、縱使、即便」等等。它用來表達「假設」，也就是不真實或想像的情況，通常表示你即將在未來要做某件事，就算在接下來的過程中可能出現和計畫牴觸的狀況，你還是會這麼做。
Even if being my own boss is not easy, I will still work my ass off until I make it.
就算當自己的老闆不容易，我還是要拚了命幹下去直到成功為止。Even if you paid me one million dollars, I still wouldn’t eat that cockroach.
就算你付我一百萬，我也不會吃那隻蟑螂。（有勇氣和本事吃下去的機率微乎其微 😂）Even if he passes the test, I don’t think he will get into that college.
儘管他通過考試，我不認為他會順利進入那所大學。
even if 和 even though 可以用 even 代替嗎？
此外，很多人會誤以為 even if 和 even though 可以用 even 替代，但要注意 even 單獨出現的時候，不具有連接詞的功能，也沒有雖然或儘管的意思，所以是不行的喔！

就算山姆有顏值又是肌肉男，我也不會和他約會。Even though I’ve polished and cleaned the vase, it still looks old. ⭕️

even if 和 even though 的共通點和差異
以上敘述完兩者最大的差異點即在於語意與事實的強調，你一定很清楚 even though 和 even if 是不能互相替換的。
不過，它們之間還是有共通點，兩者都屬連接詞，用來連接兩個句子，同樣具強調的作用，放在句子裡的位置也相同，可選擇放在句中或句首。
讓我們再看看以下相似的例子之間的差異到底在哪裡：
Even though she loves him, she still chooses to hide her feelings.
雖然她愛他，還是選擇隱藏她的情感。➡️ 強調她愛她，而且出乎意料地隱藏情感的事實。
Even if she loves him, she will probably hide her feelings.
= She will probably hide her feelings even if she loves him.
就算她愛他，她很可能還是會隱藏她的情感。➡️ 強調一種假設，想像她愛他這件事發生了，她也不會表達情感的情況。

答案：Even if I had one hour to spare for shopping, I would rather stay here.
① ＿＿＿ Fifi is rich, she lives a simple, frugal lifestyle.
雖然菲菲很有錢，她還是過著簡單又節儉的生活。
Even though Fifi is rich, she lives a simple, frugal lifestyle.
➡️ 菲菲很有錢和過簡樸生活皆是一個既定的事實，所以會使用 even though。
② ＿＿＿ I had time and money, I still wouldn’t travel around the world.
就算我有時間和金錢，我也不會環遊世界。
Even if I had time and money, I still wouldn’t travel around the world.
➡️ 從時間點來看，環遊世界還沒有發生，而且屬於一種假設狀況，因此使用 even if。
③ ＿＿＿ his company offers him a promotion, he won’t take it.
就算他的公司讓他升遷，他也不會接受。
Even if his company offers him a promotion, he won’t take it.
➡️ 這句話推測公司會做出讓他升遷的決定，不會接受也僅止於未來的某種猜想，所以是一種假設，應使用 even if。
④ ＿＿＿ they had the money, they wouldn’t live in a luxurious house.
Even if they had the money, they wouldn’t live in a luxurious house.
就算他們有一筆錢，也不會去住豪華的房子。➡️ 這題假設有一筆錢，但事實上還沒有，當然連住豪華房子這件事也是想像出來的，所以是還沒發生的不真實情境，需使用 even if。
⑤ ＿＿＿ Jack likes animals, he doesn’t want a rabbit.
Even though Jack likes animals, he doesn’t want a rabbit.
雖然傑克喜歡動物，但他不想要養兔子。➡️ 傑克喜歡動物和他不想要養兔子都是一個事實，所以答案是 even though。
