講到要告知他人一件事的英文，很多人第一個想到的動詞應該會是 tell 沒錯吧？不過呢，如果是要用在比較正式的商業書信中，inform 會是更好的選擇唷！那在使用 inform 的時候有沒有要特別留意的地方呢？一起往下看下去吧！👀
inform 的用法
inform 中文意思為「告知、通知」，比起 tell 用起來會更正式，像是重要的訊息、公司的錄取通知、學校入學許可等。另外，應該可以看得出來 inform 跟 information（資訊）是來自同一個家族的，所以會有傳遞資訊的意涵唷。
接著，我們來看看 inform 用在 email 大概會是什麼模樣吧：
This email is to inform you about the status of your order.
這風電子郵件是要來告知你訂單的狀態。I am writing to inform you of the rescheduled date of the conference.
這封信是要來通知你那場會議變更後的日期。We’re glad to inform you that we’ve received your order and will process it soon.
我們很高興要告知你說我們已經收到你的訂單並會儘快處理。I regret to inform you that you were not selected for this position.
我很遺憾地要通知你說你並沒有入選這個職位。
由此可見，inform 的用法並不複雜，可以歸納成兩種主要的句型：
❶ inform + 人 + of/about + 事情
這個用法會用來表示「告知某人…、通知某人…」，那一定要記得在所告知的事情前面放上 of 或 about 唷，這是比較多學習者會犯的錯誤：
I will inform you of the final decision by the end of this month. ⭕️
I will inform you the final decision by the end of this month. ❌
我會在這個月底前告知你最終的決定。
The doctor forgot to inform him about the side effects of the pills.
那位醫生忘了告知他這款藥錠的副作用。We haven’t been informed of the location of the workshop.
我們還沒被告知那場工作坊的地點。
❷ inform + 人 + that 子句
inform 另一個用法是要搭配 that 子句，而 that 是可以被省略的唷，只是通常會選擇保留，例如：
The manager informed me (that) I will get promoted next month.
經理通知說我將在下個月升職。We are pleased to inform you (that) you have been chosen as one of our brand ambassadors.
我們很高興要告訴你，你已經被選為我們其中一位品牌大使。Have you been informed (that) the speech was canceled?
你有被通知那場講座取消了嗎？
補充：inform 的其他意思與用法
看完了 inform 常見的用法，以下要來介紹兩組其他的用法唷：
📌 inform + on/against + 人
inform on/against 會用來表示 「告發」，而且通常是指暗中向警方告發他人的不法，例如：
The man refused to inform on his friends even though he knew they were the murderers.
那個男人拒絕告發他的朋友們，即使他知道他們就是兇手。There must be somebody who informed against the drug dealer.
一定有某個人去向警方告發了那個毒販。
📌 informed
informed 為形容詞，可以單用來表示一個人「見聞廣泛的」或是表示「對…很了解的」，其相關的句型還有：
- keep 某人 informed on/of/about 某事 使某人知悉/了解…
- 某人 be informed on/of/about 某事
- 某人 be informed that…
另外，informed 也可以表示事物是「有所根據的」，常搭配的字像是 an informed choice/decision/opinion/judgment（有所根據的選擇/決定/意見/判斷）。
而要表示程度的話，well-informed 可以用來描述「對於…非常了解」，反之則會用 ill-informed，字中間有無 – (hyphen) 皆可，來看看例句吧：
The speeches helped the college students make more informed decisions about their career goals.
那些講座幫助了這些大學生對於他們的職涯目標做出更加有所依據的決定。The man is well-informed, so he was elected as the head of his village.
那個男人見聞很廣泛，所以他被票選為村長。Please keep me fully informed of my father’s disease and condition.
請讓我能對於我爸的病情有全盤的了解。Most people are not well-informed about the new electoral system.
大部分的人對於新的選舉制度並不是很熟悉。You will be well informed on what kind of products you can use to lose weight in this workshop.
你將會在這場工作坊對於減重要使用何種產品有充分地了解。Please be informed that the meeting will be held at 8 A.M. tomorrow.
請知悉那場會議將會在明天早上八點舉行。
