說到英文中表達「避免」的方式，你可能知道我們會說avoid或prevent。
但是你知道這兩個字的用法差在哪嗎？
今天就一起來看看avoid和prevent有什麼差別吧！
Avoid 避免
在意義方面，avoid的的含意是「避開」某件不好的事情、使某人「錯過」某件事情。
換句話說，avoid 是用在要「避開某件已經存在或發生的情況。」
在用法方面，主要有兩種：
Avoid + Ving
avoid後面可以接名詞或動詞ing：
We avoided driving through downtown because of the heavy traffic.
因為交通繁忙，我們避免開車經過鬧區。
Avoid + N
I did everything to avoid my ex.
我拼命想避開我的前任。
Prevent 預防
在意義方面，Prevent 的「避免」帶有「阻止」、「預防」的含意。
跟 avoid 最大的不同在於，要「讓某件尚未出現或存在的事或情況不可能發生。」
在用法方面，有以下幾種：
Prevent + N
The arrival of the police prevented crime.
警察的抵達阻止了犯罪發生。The diplomats worked hard to prevent war.
外交官致力於阻止戰爭發生。
prevent something from Ving
The doctor is doing his best to prevent the patient’s condition from deteriorating.
醫生正竭盡所能阻止病人病情惡化。A block in the pipe was preventing the water from coming through.
水管阻塞讓水無法流通。
prevent someone from Ving
His physical disability prevents him from driving.
他的身體殘缺使他無法開車。You must prevent the children from getting hurt.
你得預防孩子們受傷。

經過上面的講解，大家對avoid和prevent之間的差別有沒有比較清楚呢？
下面有兩個句子，大家能分出哪一句要用avoid，哪一句要用prevent 嗎？
1️⃣ I ____________ driving through downtown during rush hour.
我避免在通勤時間開車經過市中心。2️⃣ John went to pick up his dad in order to ____________him from driving drunk.
強為了避免他爸爸酒駕而去接他。

其實，從這兩個句子中的介系詞就十分好判斷：
⭕第1題要用avoid，因為空格後面沒有介係詞，而接的是Ving。
從意思上判斷，因為「通勤時間交通繁忙」這個狀況已經發生，而說話者想「避開」它，所以用avoid。
⭕第2題要用prevent，因為空格後面有搭配介係詞from，屬於prevent someone from Ving 的用法。
從意思上判斷，因為「爸爸酒駕」這個狀況還沒發生，而說話者想「阻止」它發生，所以用prevent。
