看到 otherwise 這個字，大家通常都知道它是「否則」的意思，不過其實 otherwise 還有幾個其他不同的意思喔，像是「不同」和「除此之外」，在 109 年的學測就考了一題不是「否則」意思的用法，讓很多考生不知所措啊。那接著就來看看 otherwise 的其他用法和例句吧！
1. otherwise 表示「否則、不然的話」
英文解釋：if not
這裡是指，如果前面的條件沒有被滿足，就會出現後面的結果。也就是在 otherwise 後面通常會加一個不好的後果。
otherwise 在此用作副詞，通常會放在句首並加上逗號，但也可以放在句尾喔。
We need to take action to protect the environment. Otherwise, polar bears will be homeless.
我們需要採取行動來保護環境，否則，北極熊會無家可住。It’s late. I must go home now; otherwise, my dad will lock the door.
時間晚了，我現在必須要回家，要不然我爸會把門鎖起來。Put the chocolate into the refrigerator. It will melt soon otherwise.
要把這個巧克力放進冰箱，不然它很快就會融化了。
你可能會在有些字典看到 otherwise 可以用作連接詞，放在句中並加上逗號來連接前後兩個句子，此時可以與 or 互換（用 or 會比較口語），不過這個用法並不是那麼通用，比較正式的用法還是建議使用上面的方式喔。
You had better apply some sunscreen, otherwise / or you will get sunburnt.
你最好還是抹一點防曬乳，否則你會曬傷。
此外，otherwise 也常和假設語氣的句子一起使用，一方面可以用於想證明某推論是對的，另一方面可以表示因為有了前面的事情，後面的事才沒有發生。
Something must be wrong; otherwise, Kevin wouldn’t be late for work.
一定是出什麼狀況了，不然凱文上班不會遲到的。Monica must be able to sing well. Otherwise, she couldn’t have won the singing competition.
莫尼卡一定很會唱歌，不然她無法在歌唱比賽中獲勝。A kind stranger lent me some money. Otherwise, I couldn’t have gone back home.
有位好心人士借我一點錢，否則，我就無法回家了。
2. otherwise 表示「不同；以另外的方式」
英文解釋：different(ly) ; in another way
otherwise 作為副詞，表示與前面所提之事物是不同的
All the foods here are vegetarian unless otherwise noted.
這裡所有的食物都是素食的，除非有另外註記。I thought the movie was quite good, but my friend thought otherwise.
我覺得這部電影很棒，但我朋友不是這麼想的。The doctor claims that the medicine has no side effects, but one medical study suggests otherwise.
那位醫生聲稱這種藥沒有副作用，但有一個醫學研究指出是會有的。
otherwise 除了當副詞用，也可以用作形容詞，意思一樣是「不同的」。
Some of the things are cheap, but some are otherwise.
這些東西之中有些很便宜，但有些則不然。The teacher hoped the student’s behavior would be otherwise.
那位老師希望那位學生的行為可以變得不同。
3. otherwise 表示「除此之外」
英文解釋：except for what has just been referred to
otherwise 作為副詞，表示排除掉前面所提到的事情，其他都…。可以放在句首或是和 but 連用。
We didn’t visit the Cathedral as it was under renovation. Otherwise, we enjoyed the trip in Spain.
我們沒有拜訪到那個大教堂，因為它正在翻修，除此之外，我們很享受在西班牙的旅行。The bathroom is too small, but otherwise the house is perfect.
= The bathroom is too small, but the house is perfect otherwise.
除了那間廁所太小之外，這個房子的一切都很完美。
4. 相關用法：or otherwise
英文解釋：or the opposite
or otherwise 是指與前面提到的事情「相反地」或「不同地」。
Sunny or otherwise, we will go hiking this weekend.
無論晴天與否，我們這週末都會去健行。I would never date an American again, pretty or otherwise.
我再也不會和美國人約會，無論美醜。The advantages or otherwise of the product will be discussed in the meeting.
這個產品的優勢與劣勢將會在這場會議中討論。

所以答案會選 (D) otherwise，意思就是「以不同方式…」。很多考生因為只知道 otherwise 有「否則」的意思，因此錯過了這個選項而答錯。
