唷齁～大家好，歡迎來到英文庫，我是 Min 👋。今天咱們要來搞定的是「除了／除外」的英文怎麼說。一開始暖個身，先給你一個情境，假如要表達「大家都準時抵達，我弟除外」，這樣要怎麼說呢？來來來，你有以下這些選擇。
- Everyone arrived on time except my brother.
- Everyone arrived on time apart from my brother.
- Everyone arrived on time other than my brother.
遇到想表達「某個人事物除外，不包含在內」的情況，就把那個人事物，像是上面的 my brother，放在 except、apart from、other than 後面，這樣就好囉 👌。
通常大家會比較熟悉 except，對 apart from、other than 很陌生，甚至會覺得它們長得好奇怪啊，其實你就直接把它們看成 except 的分身就可以了。此外，大家比較容易犯錯的情況，是當它們後面加名詞以外的字詞或句子時，會搞不清楚要怎麼用才是對的。所以接下來，咱們就依序來看詳細用法吧，Let’s go! 💃
一、except的用法
想表示「除外」的情況，在台灣大家最熟的應該就是 except 了。 插播一下，except （除外）和 expect （預期）是意思跟發音完全不同的兩個字，小心別再搞混囉！底下我們就來看 except 加名詞、句子、動詞時，分別要怎麼用？
except 加名詞：表示在同一類的人事物當中，並不包含 XX，如果 XX 是名詞，這時可以用 except，也可以用 except for，而前面通常是不加逗點的，例如：
My boss invited everyone except / except for me.
我老闆邀請了每個人，我除外 😭。The pizza shop is open daily except / except for Monday.
那間披薩店每天都有營業，星期一除外。I suck at all the school subjects except / except for Chinese and English.
我在學校每一科都很爛 😭，國英文除外。
except 加句子：如果 XX 是句子，這時除了 except ，也可以用 except that，此時的 that 是沒有意思的，就只是一個單純功能性的連接詞。
The twins look exactly alike except / except that one is a little taller.
那對雙胞胎長得一模一樣，除了其中一位高一點點。He had nothing to tell me except / except that I had to wait.
他除了叫我等候之外，就沒再跟我說什麼了。
except 加動詞：咦，那如果 XX 是動詞呢？很多同學會以為就直接加上這個動詞，No No No! 這時 except 和動詞的中間，需要加上一個 to 來隔開才行，這樣才符合英文的文法喔。
I had few options except let him stay. ❌
I had few options except to let him stay. ⭕️
我沒多少選擇，除了讓他留下。
She wouldn’t talk about the problem, except say that she was fine. ❌
She wouldn’t talk about the problem, except to say that she was fine. ⭕️
她不肯聊那個問題，只說她沒事的。
⚠️ 但是！話說回來，英文就跟人生一樣，總有很多例外 🚬。當句子前面的動詞是 do （做），這時 except 後面的動詞，反而要用原形才是對的。這個例外太特別了，真的需要用力記一下啊啊啊。
I did nothing yesterday except clean the room. ⭕️
I did nothing yesterday except to clean the room. ❌
我昨天沒做什麼事，除了打掃房間。
二、apart from 的用法
相較於 except，apart from 的用法單純很多（YAY!），它後面通常就只會加名詞或 V-ing 而已。對了，apart from 的前面加不加逗點都可以，都還滿常見的。
It’s not a bad job(,) apart from the longer working hours.
這工作還不錯，除了工時較長。The dinner he cooked yesterday was good(,) apart from the chicken.
昨天他煮的晚餐滿好吃的，除了雞肉。He didn’t move(,) apart from nodding his head.
他沒有移動，除了點了點頭。I didn’t tell him anything(,) apart from saying “thanks”.
我沒有告訴他任何事，只說了聲謝謝。
三、other than 的用法
來到最後一個 other than 囉。有時候學生會有奇怪的衝動想在 other than 中間加入其他字，但小心，other than 都是固定黏在一起的，不要拆散它們喔（搖手指）。一樣，other than 後面加的東西跟 except 一樣，也有名詞、句子、動詞的可能性 👇。
other than 加名詞：先從大家最熟悉的用法開始，也就是直接加名詞，來看例句。
I haven’t told anyone other than my cousin.
除了表哥，我還沒告訴任何人。She doesn’t drink alcohol other than champagne and white wines.
除了香檳跟白酒，她不喝其他酒類。
不過，有時候我們也會遇到特別的情況，會需要先加一個介系詞，才能再接名詞。就像下面這兩個例句，受到中文的影響，大家會很容易就漏掉了介系詞，但此時英文是需要介系詞的，這樣文法才正確喔。
They don’t eat out, other than Japanese restaurants. ❌
They don’t eat out, other than at Japanese restaurants. ⭕️
除了去日本餐廳，他們都不會在外面吃飯。
➡ 還原的話是「They eat out at Japanese restaurants.」，所以 at 需保留
They don’t talk on the phone other than meetings. ❌
除了開會，他們是不講電話的。They don’t talk on the phone other than for meetings. ⭕️
除了開會，他們是不講電話的。➡ 還原的話是「They talk on the phone for meetings.」，所以 for 需保留
other than 加句子：再來，如果你想表達的例外情況是一個句子，怎麼辦呢？可以在 other than 後面先加上一個代名詞 that ，後面再加上這個句子，這樣就可以了 👌。
Some guests were too drunk, but other than that it was a great dinner party.
有些賓客喝得太醉，但除此之外，那個派對很成功。➡ that 代替前面的 some guests were too drunk
He doesn’t eat French fries, but other than that he eats all kinds of fast food.
他不吃薯條，但除此之外，其他速食他都吃。➡ that 代替前面的 he doesn’t eat French fries
other than 加動詞：那如果例外情況是加動詞呢？這時動詞前面也需要加一個 to 喔。就跟介系詞的情況一樣，很多學生受到中文的干擾，會不知道要加 to，這也是需要特別小心的！來看例句的分析。
He has no ambitions other than make her happy. ❌
He has no ambitions other than to make her happy. ⭕️
他對事業沒興趣，只想讓她快樂。
She wouldn’t talk about the problem, other than say that she was fine. ❌
She wouldn’t talk about the problem, other than to say that she was fine. ⭕️
她不肯聊那個問題，只說她沒事的。

上面介紹了 apart from 跟 other than 用在表示除外、不包含的狀況。結束前，這邊小補充一下，就是啊，其實它們是雙面人（！），也有包含在內的意思。等等，先不要急著咒罵英文好煩，其實中文的「除了……」也有類似雙面人的狀況，讓我證明給你看：
除了數學，其他科目我都喜歡。➡ 不包含數學
除了數學之外，其他科目我也都喜歡。➡ 包含數學在內
所以你看，在中文裡，我們會自動依照情境或前後文來判斷，到底是不包含還是包含 🤔。在英文裡，apart from 跟 other than 也是一樣的。底下就來看一下它們是包含在內時的例句吧。
It is my favorite restaurant. Apart from its good service, I like every dish it serves.
那是我最愛的餐廳，除了服務好之外，每一道菜我也都愛。The doctor is very good. Other than that, he is also patient.
