「大學」英文該用 college 還是 university？你是 college student 還是 university student?

Hello, everyone! 我是英文庫的 Celine 🙂，今天要來比較 college 和 university 的差別～

講到「大學」，你腦中可能會浮現 college 和 university 這兩個字，那它們兩個是一樣的嗎？
嗯 🤔……，其實 college 和 university 在不同英語系國家會有不同的定義和用法，而就算在同一個國家，也可能有不同的定義，所以真的是滿多元的。那這篇文章我會以美國的學制和美式英文的角度來解釋它們的差別唷。

College

college 的規模較小，一般為四年制的學校，以教學為主，通常只有大學部，不含研究所。

This college admits students anytime during the year.
這所學院在一年的任何時間都能讓學生入學。

The campus of this college is small but beautiful.
這所學院的校園雖然小但是很美。

其他還有另外兩種學院，介紹如下：

Liberal arts college 為「文理學院」，規模較小，多數為私立的。課程為四年制，畢業生一樣可以得到學士學位（Bachelor’s degree）。重視博雅教育，主要科系選擇不那麼廣，包括歷史、文學、生命科學、數學等。學校以教學為主，課堂通常為小班制，重視討論及獨立思考，學生和教授關係較為密切。例如：威廉姆斯文理學院 Williams College、衛斯理女子學院 Wellesley College。

Community college 為「社區學院」，課程主要為兩年制，修業完的學生可以獲得副學士證明（Associate’s degree）。規模較小，入學條件較低，由於學費便宜，不少人會選擇先就讀 community college ，之後再就讀一般 college 或 university 以獲得學士學位。

University

university 的規模較大，可以說是綜合性的研究大學，匯集了不同學院及研究所，也就是包含了學士（Bachelor’s degree）及碩博士學位 (Master’s degree & Doctorate degree) 的課程。

university 的科系和課程較為多元，班級學生數也較多，例如：史丹佛大學 Stanford University、紐約大學 New York University。

He applied to several private universities.
他申請了幾所私立大學。

There are many overseas students in this university.
這間大學有很多國外學生。

College vs. University：三個補充

關於 college 和 university 的內容，以下提供三個補充：

• 一般來說，會把 college 翻譯成「學院」，有些學院會隸屬於大學 (university) 底下，像是哈佛學院 Harvard College 就隸屬於哈佛大學 Harvard University，提供學士學位的課程（Bachelor’s degree）。
• 在某些大學 (university) 中，各學院的命名會使用 college 這個字，例如：工程學院 College of Engineering、藝術學院 College of Arts。
• 上述介紹分辨 college 和 university 的性質並非絕對唷，著名學校像是達特茅斯學院 Dartmouth College、威廉與瑪麗學院 College of William & Mary 其實規模算是綜合型大學 (university)，但它們仍然沿用著 college 的稱號。

大學生要說 college student 還是 university student？

看完以上的比較，你可能會有個疑問，就讀 college 的學生為 college student，而就讀 university 就是 university student 嗎？

👩🏻‍🏫 答案是：不完全對！

其實在美式英文中，他們還是習慣統稱大學生為 college student，不論是就讀哪一種大學，也就是說，只要是在指稱大學生，就會以 college 這個字為主喔。（當然，如果要說讀 university 的學生為 university student 也不會有錯啦，只是 university student 這個詞可以指稱大學生或研究生唷。）

例如：

• a college student  大學生
• a college graduate  大學畢業生
• go to college  上大學
• attend college  上大學（較正式）
• be in college  讀大學
• graduate from college  大學畢業

Where did you go to college? / What college did you attend?
你之前讀哪間大學？

George didn’t go to college, but he still has a very good job.
George 沒有讀大學，但他仍然有個非常好的工作。

My mom met my dad when they were in college.
我媽跟我爸是上大學的時候認識的。

I haven’t seen Kevin since we graduated from college.
自從大學畢業後，我就沒見過 Kevin 了。
