不管是在新聞、政治人物的發言，或是一些研究報告中，你可能或多或少都看過 contribute to 的蹤影，像是在說某個大企業捐了多少錢 💰 或是某個物質會導致什麼疾病等，所以理解 contribute to 的用法絕對是對你的閱讀及寫作很有幫助，接著我們就一起來看看它的各種用法吧！Let’s go!
contribute to 的意思和用法
首先，我們來學習 contribute 的發音 👄，它的音標是 /kənˈtrɪb.juːt/，美式發音的重音會固定在第二音節 contribute，而英式發音則還有另一種唸法，是重音在第一音節 contribute，但就比較少聽到囉。
接下來，分別來看看 contribute to 的三種意思與用法：
1️⃣ contribute to 表示「貢獻」
contribute 最原先的意思是用來表示「貢獻、奉獻、投入」，可以是指金錢或物資上的捐獻，也可以是時間、體力、想法上的給予，這裡也一起介紹它的名詞 contribution，亦是出場率很高的字。
在用法上，會用 contribute to/toward + N/V-ing，或是 contribute + 事物 + to/toward + N/V-ing，留意一下這裡的 to 是介系詞，所以後面要搭配名詞或動名詞唷，看看例句吧：
Every group member should contribute to the discussion.
每位組員都應該參與討論。Would you like to contribute toward the manager’s retirement gift?
你想一起合資給經理買份退休禮物嗎？What can you contribute to the company?
你對公司能有什麼貢獻？Our company contributed one million dollars to the foundation.
我們公司捐了一百萬給那家基金會。The volunteers contributed their time to the summer camp for disadvantaged children.
那些志工把他們的時間投入在辦給弱勢孩童的夏令營。They contribute their time toward cleaning up the streets every week.
他們每週都把自己的時間貢獻於清掃街道。I gotta thank everybody that contributed to this project.
我要感謝所有為這份計畫付出的人。
2️⃣ contribute to 表示「導致」
contribute 還能用來表示「導致、促使、有助於」，也就是事件 A 使得事件 B 發生，可以是正面或負面的，和 cause 的意思類似。這個用法滿常可以在新聞媒體或是一些研究結果看到，你之後可以留意看看囉。
在用法上，這裡要用 contribute to + N/V-ing，這個 to 一樣是介系詞唷。
Lack of exercise has contributed to his health problems.
缺乏運動導致他的健康出問題。Heavy cigarette smoking contributes to lung cancer.
重度吸菸會導致肺癌。The incident contributed to her defeat in the election.
那個事件使她敗選了。Some people think that setting New Year’s resolutions can contribute to depression.
有些人認為設立新年目標會使人感到憂鬱。The increased number of flights contributes to developing trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.
航班的增加促進了兩國經貿合作的進展。
3️⃣ contribute to 表示「撰稿」
contribute 還有一個意思是「撰稿、投稿」，指的是向報章雜誌、出版社或網站等撰寫文章，這個用法相對上面的兩個語意會少見一點。
而用法則跟前面的差不多，會是 contribute to + 對象，或是 contribute + 事物 + to + 對象，例如：
She regularly contributes to the magazine.
她很常為那家雜誌撰稿。The professor continued to contribute articles to several journals.
那位教授之前一直都有向好幾家期刊投稿。The teacher encouraged his students to contribute articles to the website.
老師鼓勵他的學生去那個網站投稿。
