說到「然而」這個詞，大多數人第一個想到的應該是 however 沒錯吧～不過，英文中還是有一些其他的字詞可以用來表達然而的意思唷，像是：but / yet / however / nevertheless / nonetheless / while / whereas，不過它們的用法還是有些不一樣的部分，有滿多人在寫作上會不小心用錯的，所以建議你要能分辨他們的正確用法為何。
接下來，我們就一起來了解這些字個別的用法吧！Ready? Let’s go!
but
然而的英文可以用 but，是口語中最常見的說法，多數會翻作「但是、不過」。
當 but 用於寫作時，主要會放在句中，用來連接兩個子句，且通常會在前面加上逗號。
I want to go to the movies, but my friend wants to go shopping.
我想要去看電影，但我朋友想要去逛街。Betty enjoys dancing a lot, but she’s not good at it.
Betty 非常喜歡跳舞，但她並不是很擅長。We invited our teacher to the party, but he didn’t want to come.
我們邀請了老師來派對，但是他並不想來。
yet
yet 跟 but 的意思和用法滿接近的，也是在表達轉折語氣。
當 yet 用於寫作時，主要也是放在句中，用來連接兩個子句，且通常會在前面加上逗號。
He didn’t like his job, yet he didn’t want to change it.
他不喜歡他的工作，但他也不想換掉它。She had a serious car accident, yet she was in one piece.
她出了嚴重的車禍，但她人卻毫髮無傷。
此外，yet 的用法比較特別，如果在前面加上 and 也是可以的唷～
He didn’t like his job, and yet he didn’t want to quit it.
She had a serious car accident, and yet she was in one piece.
however
然而的英文常使用 however，尤其是在寫作方面或是比較正式的場合。
however 通常會放在句首，後面接逗號。那如果想把 however 放在兩個句子之間時，可以使用分號，後面一樣會用逗號隔開句子唷。
Monica is an outstanding singer. However, she still can’t meet her parents’ expectations.
= Monica is an outstanding singer; however, she still can’t meet her parents’ expectations.
Monica 是一位傑出的歌手，然而，她還是無法達到父母的期待。What he said is true. However, nobody wants to believe him.
= What he said is true; however, nobody wants to believe him.
他所說的話是真的，然而，沒有人願意相信他。
此外，however 可以放句中當作插入語使用，這時候前後都會加上逗號。或是也可以放在句尾，前面加逗號，不過放句尾的語氣就會比較弱一點。看看例子吧：
Frank had a chance to work as an engineer at Google. He, however, declined the job offer and chose to start his business.
Frank 有機會到 Google 當工程師，但他拒絕了並選擇創業。This problem, however, should be considered more carefully.
然而，這個問題應該要更仔細地考量。The mother tried different ways to calm her baby. He kept crying loudly, however.
那位媽媽試了很多方法安撫她的寶寶，但是寶寶還是一直在大哭。
nevertheless / nonetheless
nevertheless 和 nonetheless 都可以作為「然而、不過」之意，會把它們兩個放在一起講是因為用法差不多，不過 nevertheless 會比 nonetheless 常用一點。
首先，要留意它們的拼字是 never + the + less 以及 none + the + less，中間的 the 不要漏掉 e 了，而主重音在 ”less” 這裡，點上面的連結可以聽發音唷～
基本上呢，nevertheless、nonetheless 和 however 的用法差不多，都作為轉折副詞，可以放在句首、句中或句尾，不過語氣會比 however 強烈一點，且為比較正式的用字。
Joe finally made his dream come true. Nevertheless/Nonetheless, he didn’t feel excited as he had expected.
Joe 的夢想終於成真了，然而，他並沒有如他所預期地興奮。The athlete tried her best in the tennis competition. She, nevertheless/nonetheless, couldn’t win the competition.
那位運動員在那場羽球比賽全力以赴了，然而她還是無法贏得比賽。The question seemed very easy. Nobody got the right answer, nevertheless/nonetheless.
那個問題看起來非常簡單，但卻沒有任何人答對。
與 however 不同的是，nevertheless 和 nonetheless 很常會和 but 一起使用以加強轉折語氣。在此，nevertheless 和 nonetheless 的位置可以放在 but 之後或是句尾。
The sightseeing tour was free, but nobody wanted to join it nevertheless/nonetheless.
這個觀光行程是免費的，然而卻沒有人想要參加。The game was very difficult, but interesting nevertheless/nonetheless.
那場比賽很困難，但是很有趣。Everyone enjoyed the food very much, but nevertheless/nonetheless I found it disgusting.
每個人都非常享受那些食物，但我卻覺得吃起來很噁心。

whereas / while
whereas 和 while 都可以表示「而、然而」，且用法差不多，所以這裡一起講解～
whereas 和 while 表達的主要會是兩個子句的「對比關係」，不一定會是相反的。位置可以放在句首或句中，用來連接子句。放句中時，前面的逗號加或不加皆可，句子比較長時通常會加。
要特別留意 whereas 的重音是在第二音節，這個字比較多人會唸錯，可以點這裡聽發音唷。
Whereas/While the plan is perfect, it’s way over budget.
即使這個計劃很完美，但超過預算太多了。Many people supported the new policy, whereas/while others were totally opposed to it.
很多人支持這個新政策，但是其他人卻全然反對。It’s sunny in Taipei, whereas/while it’s raining heavily in Tainan.
台北現在是晴天，而台南卻在下大雨。My dad likes horror movies, whereas/while my mom prefers romantic ones.
我爸喜歡恐怖片，而我媽比較喜歡愛情片。
